What is it used for?
Piperacillin + tazobactam is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It is given under medical supervision.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function and other medical factors. Do not self-administer or stop treatment early unless instructed by the prescriber.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash and pain or redness at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics, kidney disease, bleeding problems or a history of severe diarrhoea after antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, unusual bleeding or seizures.
