What is it used for?
Piracetam is mainly used, under specialist supervision, to help control cortical myoclonus—repeated, involuntary muscle jerking caused by a brain or nerve disorder.

How does it work?
Its exact action is not fully understood. It may help regulate the function of nerve-cell membranes and communication between brain cells.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor, at the recommended times. Do not change the dose or stop treatment suddenly without medical advice, especially when it is being used for myoclonus. Drink enough water unless fluid restriction has been advised.

Common side effects
Nervousness, restlessness, irritability, sleep problems, headache, dizziness, nausea, stomach discomfort and diarrhoea.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, a history of bleeding or haemorrhagic stroke, or use of blood-thinning medicines. Medical advice is needed before surgery. Avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically prescribed. Seek medical help for unusual bleeding, severe weakness or an allergic reaction.
