What is it used for?
Piroxicam is an anti-inflammatory painkiller used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness in conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is generally used only when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed and follow the instructions on the product label. Do not use more than recommended or for longer than advised. The dose and route depend on the product form; if it is an injection, it should be given by a healthcare professional. Do not combine it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Avoid use if there is a history of stomach ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding, severe kidney or liver disease, heart failure, or an allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs, unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, blood-clotting problems, or use of blood thinners, steroids or other painkillers. It may increase the risk of stomach bleeding, kidney problems and cardiovascular events. Avoid during pregnancy, especially after 20 weeks and in the last trimester, unless prescribed. Seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe allergic reactions, chest pain or difficulty breathing.
