What is it used for?
Piroxicam is an anti-inflammatory painkiller used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness in conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It may also be prescribed for other painful inflammatory joint or muscle conditions.

How does it work?
It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the instructions on the label for the correct route and method of use. Do not use more than prescribed or for longer than recommended. Avoid combining it with other painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, dizziness and skin rash.

Precautions
Piroxicam can cause stomach ulcers or bleeding. Tell the doctor if there is a history of ulcers, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by painkillers, or if blood thinners are being used. It should generally be avoided during pregnancy, especially the last three months, unless specifically prescribed. Seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash.
