What is it used for?
Piroxicam is an anti-inflammatory painkiller used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness in conditions such as arthritis and other muscle or joint problems.

How does it work?
It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed. Follow the instructions on the label. If directed, disperse the tablet in water before taking it. Taking it with or after food may help reduce stomach irritation. Do not take more or use it for longer than advised.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and skin rash.

Precautions
Piroxicam can cause stomach ulcers or bleeding, and may affect the kidneys or heart. Avoid it if there is a history of serious allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs, stomach ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding, unless specifically advised by a doctor. Do not take it with other NSAID painkillers unless advised. Tell the doctor about kidney, liver, heart or blood-pressure problems, or if taking blood thinners. Avoid use during the last 3 months of pregnancy. Seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash.
