What is it used for?
Piroxicam is used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness caused by arthritis and other painful muscle, joint or bone conditions. It may also be prescribed for short-term treatment of acute painful inflammation, such as gout.

How does it work?
It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID). It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. Dissolve the dispersible tablet as directed on the label or by the pharmacist, and do not take more than the prescribed amount. Taking it with or after food may help reduce stomach irritation. Do not use it with other NSAID painkillers unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and skin rash.

Precautions
Piroxicam can cause stomach ulcers or bleeding, especially with prolonged use. Seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Tell the doctor if there is a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by painkillers, or an allergy to NSAIDs. It may not be suitable during pregnancy, particularly after 20 weeks and in the last 3 months. Avoid alcohol and inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially blood thinners, steroids, aspirin or other NSAIDs.
