What is it used for?
Potassium chloride is used to prevent or treat low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia), when potassium replacement is needed.

How does it work?
It replenishes potassium, an essential mineral needed for normal nerve, muscle and heart function.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed route and instructions carefully. If supplied as a concentrated solution for injection, it must be diluted and administered by a healthcare professional; never inject or use it undiluted. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort or diarrhoea may occur. Injection-site pain or irritation can occur when given by injection. Too much potassium can cause weakness, tingling or an irregular heartbeat and requires urgent medical attention.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, high potassium levels, heart disease or adrenal gland problems. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment. Inform the doctor about medicines such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, potassium-sparing diuretics or other potassium supplements, as they can increase potassium levels.
