What is it used for?
Propofol is an intravenous medicine used by healthcare professionals to start and maintain general anaesthesia during surgery. It may also be used to provide sedation for certain medical procedures and, in specialist settings, for patients receiving intensive care.

How does it work?
Propofol slows activity in the brain by enhancing the effect of a natural calming chemical called GABA. This produces sleep and loss of awareness; it does not provide pain relief on its own.

How to take/use it
Propofol is given into a vein by an anaesthetist or other trained healthcare professional in a hospital or clinical setting. Breathing, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels must be closely monitored during use.

Common side effects
Pain or discomfort at the injection site, low blood pressure, slow or shallow breathing, temporary pauses in breathing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness may occur.

Precautions
It must only be administered where equipment and trained staff are available to support breathing and circulation. Tell the doctor about allergies, breathing problems, heart or blood-pressure problems, liver or kidney disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all medicines being used. Do not drive, drink alcohol or make important decisions until the effects have fully worn off and medical advice permits it.
