What is it used for?
Propofol is an intravenous anaesthetic used in hospitals to induce and maintain general anaesthesia during surgery. It may also be used to provide sedation for certain medical procedures or for patients receiving intensive care.

How does it work?
It acts on the brain to reduce activity and produce sleep-like unconsciousness and sedation. It also reduces awareness of pain and other sensations during anaesthesia.

How to take/use it
Propofol is given into a vein by a trained anaesthetist or other qualified healthcare professional. The dose is individually adjusted, and breathing, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels must be closely monitored. It must not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Pain or burning at the injection site, low blood pressure, slowed or stopped breathing, slow heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and confusion on waking.

Precautions
It should only be used where airway and breathing support equipment and trained medical staff are available. Extra care is needed in people with breathing or heart problems, low blood pressure, or allergies to propofol or its ingredients. Seek urgent medical attention for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or loss of consciousness that does not improve after the procedure.
