What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and brain coverings. It is also used for some infections around surgery, when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, age and other medical factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash and changes in liver test results may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it without medical supervision. Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefotaxime, cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics, and about kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if severe or persistent diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.
