What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and brain coverings. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain or inflammation at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and fever may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics, or a history of kidney or liver problems. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only under medical supervision.
