What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This injection is given into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age and kidney function. Do not self-inject or stop treatment early unless advised by the healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea or vomiting; and skin rash.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin-type antibiotics, and about kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if severe or persistent diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.
