What is it used for?
Octreotide is used to control excess growth hormone in acromegaly. It is also used to reduce severe diarrhoea and flushing caused by some hormone-producing tumours, and may be used in certain cases of bleeding from enlarged veins in the food pipe.

How does it work?
It acts like the natural hormone somatostatin and reduces the release of several hormones and other substances in the body, including growth hormone and substances that increase intestinal secretions.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection under medical supervision or exactly as prescribed. The route, dose and treatment duration depend on the condition being treated. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Injection-site pain, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, headache, dizziness, and gallstones or other gallbladder problems. Blood sugar changes and a slow heartbeat may also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is diabetes, gallbladder disease, thyroid problems, heart rhythm or heart-rate problems, or liver disease. Blood sugar, thyroid function, heart rate and gallbladder health may need monitoring. Seek medical help for severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fainting, or symptoms of very high or low blood sugar.
