What is it used for?
Octreotide is used to control excess growth hormone in acromegaly. It is also used to reduce symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and flushing caused by certain hormone-producing tumours, and may be used in some cases of bleeding from enlarged veins in the food pipe.

How does it work?
Octreotide acts like the natural hormone somatostatin. It reduces the release of growth hormone and several other hormones that can cause diarrhoea, flushing or other symptoms.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein, or as a long-acting injection into a muscle, depending on the condition being treated. It should be administered exactly as prescribed by a doctor or healthcare professional. The dose and treatment schedule vary by condition.

Common side effects
Pain or irritation at the injection site, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain or discomfort, nausea, headache, dizziness, changes in blood sugar, and gallstones may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is diabetes, gallbladder disease, thyroid disease, heart rhythm or slow-heartbeat problems, or liver disease. Blood sugar, thyroid function and gallbladder health may need monitoring.
