What is it used for?
Iohexol is a contrast medium used during certain X-rays, CT scans, angiograms and other imaging tests. It helps blood vessels, organs or body tissues show up more clearly on the images. It is used for diagnosis, not to treat a disease.

How does it work?
Iohexol contains iodine, which absorbs X-rays. This creates greater contrast between different tissues and makes the area being examined easier to see.

How to take/use it
Iohexol is given by injection or through another route by a trained healthcare professional before or during the imaging test. It must not be self-administered. Follow the instructions provided by the radiology team, including any advice about fluids or eating and drinking.

Common side effects
A temporary warm or flushed feeling, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, or pain and discomfort at the injection site may occur. Most reactions are mild and short-lasting.

Precautions
Tell the doctor or radiology team about any previous reaction to contrast media, kidney problems, thyroid disease, asthma, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Inform them about all medicines being taken, especially medicines for diabetes or kidney-related conditions. Seek immediate medical help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, fainting, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction.
