What is it used for?
Rifaximin 550 mg is used to reduce the risk of repeated episodes of hepatic encephalopathy in adults with liver disease. It may also be prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D), under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It is a gut-acting antibiotic that reduces the growth of certain bacteria in the intestines. This can help reduce the production of substances linked with hepatic encephalopathy and improve diarrhoea-related symptoms in some patients.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water; it may generally be taken with or without food. Do not self-treat diarrhoea with this medicine or change the prescribed treatment duration.

Common side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain or bloating, headache, dizziness, constipation, and tiredness may occur. Seek medical advice if side effects are severe or persistent.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergy to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics, liver disease, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
