What is it used for?
Rifaximin is an antibiotic used mainly to treat certain bacterial infections in the intestine, including some types of infectious diarrhoea. It may also be prescribed to help prevent episodes of hepatic encephalopathy in people with liver disease.

How does it work?
It acts mainly inside the intestine and stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins needed for growth. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course. It can generally be taken with or without food, but follow the product label or prescriber’s instructions. Do not use it for diarrhoea with fever or blood unless medically advised.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach or abdominal pain, bloating or gas, constipation, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if allergic to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, fever, blood in the stool, or worsening symptoms. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being used. Stop and seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergy, such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
