What is it used for?
Rifaximin 550 mg is mainly prescribed to help reduce the risk of repeated episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, a brain-related complication of serious liver disease. It may also be prescribed for certain cases of diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, depending on the doctor’s advice and local approval.

How does it work?
It is an antibiotic that acts mainly inside the intestine. It reduces the growth of certain gut bacteria and the harmful substances they may produce.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. It may usually be taken with or without food, but follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach discomfort or pain, constipation, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, tiredness and swelling of the hands or feet may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to rifaximin or other rifamycin antibiotics. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, fever, severe abdominal pain or signs of an allergic reaction. People with severe liver disease, or those taking warfarin or other regular medicines, should use it only under medical supervision. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
