What is it used for?
Sertraline is an antidepressant used to treat depression and several anxiety-related conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder. It may also be prescribed for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

How does it work?
It increases the availability of serotonin, a natural chemical messenger in the brain that helps regulate mood and anxiety.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food, and try to take it at the same time each day. Swallow with water. Do not stop treatment suddenly without medical advice, as symptoms may return or withdrawal effects may occur.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, dry mouth, sleep problems or sleepiness, increased sweating, and sexual difficulties. These effects may improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Seek urgent help for suicidal thoughts, severe agitation, unusual mood elevation, seizures, or symptoms such as fever, confusion, heavy sweating, muscle stiffness, or a fast heartbeat. Tell the doctor about bipolar disorder, liver disease, epilepsy, bleeding problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use with MAO inhibitors, and check before taking other antidepressants, blood thinners, painkillers such as ibuprofen, or herbal products such as St John’s wort. Avoid alcohol if it worsens drowsiness or dizziness.
