What is it used for?
This combination of sitagliptin and metformin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Sitagliptin helps the body release more insulin after meals and reduces the amount of sugar made by the liver. Metformin reduces sugar production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, regularly and with meals if advised, to reduce stomach upset. Do not change the dose or stop it without medical advice. The dose may need adjustment if kidney function is reduced.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, vomiting, headache and reduced appetite. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or a history of pancreatitis. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, unusual weakness, rapid breathing or extreme tiredness. Avoid excessive alcohol. Kidney function may need monitoring, and the medicine may need to be stopped temporarily around some contrast-dye scans or major surgery. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
