What is it used for?
Sitagliptin with metformin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Sitagliptin helps the body release more insulin after meals and reduces the release of sugar by the liver. Metformin reduces sugar production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole unless the product instructions say otherwise. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, gas, vomiting, headache and a metallic taste may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Kidney function should be checked before and during treatment. Seek medical help for severe or persistent stomach pain, especially with vomiting, as this may indicate pancreatitis. Avoid excessive alcohol. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, heart failure, dehydration, planned surgery or an X-ray/scan using injected contrast dye. Seek urgent help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness or feeling very cold, which may be signs of a rare but serious reaction. This medicine is not a substitute for diet, exercise and regular blood-sugar monitoring.
