What is it used for?
Sitagliptin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
It helps the body increase insulin release after meals and reduce the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. This helps lower blood glucose levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water and do not stop treatment without medical advice. The dose may need adjustment in people with kidney problems.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach discomfort, and symptoms of a cold or upper respiratory infection may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when it is taken with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous pancreatitis, or allergies to this medicine. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to the back, or for signs of a serious allergic reaction. Report severe or persistent joint pain or blistering skin. Continue monitoring blood sugar as advised.
