What is it used for?
Sitagliptin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, as prescribed.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called DPP-4, helping the body increase insulin release when blood sugar is high and reduce the release of hormones that raise blood sugar.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it at the same time each day. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose; do not take two doses together. The dose may need adjustment in people with kidney problems.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach discomfort and cold-like symptoms may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when it is taken with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous pancreatitis, or allergies to diabetes medicines. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, blistering skin, or severe joint pain. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
