What is it used for?
Sitagliptin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, as prescribed.

How does it work?
It helps the body release more insulin after meals and reduces the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. This helps lower blood glucose levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food, and swallow it with water. Do not stop treatment or change the dose without medical advice. People with reduced kidney function may need a dose adjustment.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, and cold-like symptoms such as a stuffy or runny nose or sore throat. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous pancreatitis, heart problems, or allergies to sitagliptin. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, serious skin or allergic reactions, or symptoms of very low blood sugar. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
