What is it used for?
Sitagliptin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, as prescribed.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called DPP-4, which helps the body release more insulin after meals and reduce the amount of glucose produced by the liver. This helps lower blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop it without medical advice. A doctor may need to adjust the dose if there is reduced kidney function.

Common side effects
Headache, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, nausea and stomach upset. Low blood sugar is more likely when sitagliptin is taken with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous pancreatitis or allergies to sitagliptin. Seek medical help for severe, persistent abdominal pain, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, or a widespread skin reaction. Monitor blood sugar as advised and report symptoms of low blood sugar, such as sweating, shaking, dizziness or confusion.
