What is it used for?
Sitagliptin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines as prescribed.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called DPP-4, helping the body release more insulin when blood sugar is high and reduce the amount of glucose made by the liver.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not take an extra dose if a dose is missed; follow the prescriber’s advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, common cold-like symptoms, and low blood sugar, especially when taken with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous pancreatitis, or allergies to sitagliptin. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe skin reaction. Monitor blood sugar as advised. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
