What is it used for?
Sitagliptin with metformin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin better. Sitagliptin helps the body release more insulin after meals and reduces excess glucose production when blood sugar is high.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with meals if advised, and swallow the tablet as directed. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the prescribed instructions and do not take an extra dose unless advised.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, headache and reduced appetite may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, pancreatitis, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or dehydration. Kidney function should be checked regularly. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, unusual weakness, breathing difficulty, or extreme sleepiness. Inform the doctor before surgery or contrast-dye tests, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
