What is it used for?
Spironolactone is a prescription potassium-sparing diuretic used to remove excess fluid in conditions such as heart failure. It may also be prescribed for high blood pressure and conditions caused by excess aldosterone.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of aldosterone, a hormone that makes the body retain salt and water. This helps remove excess fluid while reducing potassium loss.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed with water. Take it at the same time each day and follow the instructions about taking it with or without food. Do not stop treatment or change the dose without medical advice.

Common side effects
Dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, tiredness, increased urination, breast tenderness or enlargement, and menstrual changes. Raised potassium levels can also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, high potassium levels, or liver disease. Do not use potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. Inform the doctor about medicines such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, other potassium-sparing diuretics, or regular painkillers such as ibuprofen, as they may increase the risk of high potassium or kidney problems. Seek medical advice for muscle weakness, an irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, or reduced urination.
