What is it used for?
Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid build-up (oedema), including fluid retention related to heart failure or certain liver and kidney conditions. It may also be prescribed for excess aldosterone, a hormone that can raise blood pressure and cause fluid retention.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of aldosterone, helping the body remove extra salt and water through urine while conserving potassium. This can reduce swelling and help lower blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or without food but in the same way each time. It may increase urination, so follow the prescribed timing. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular blood tests may be needed to check potassium levels and kidney function.

Common side effects
Increased urination, dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, headache, breast tenderness or enlargement, and menstrual changes may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about kidney disease, high potassium levels, Addison’s disease, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy. Avoid potassium supplements and potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. Tell the doctor about medicines such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, other potassium-sparing medicines, diuretics, or regular painkillers such as ibuprofen, as they may increase the risk of high potassium or kidney problems. Seek medical advice for severe weakness, an irregular heartbeat, or fainting.
