What is it used for?
Sulfasalazine is used to reduce inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and, in some cases, Crohn’s disease. It is also used to treat inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis.

How does it work?
It reduces inflammation in the bowel and joints. In the bowel, it is broken down into active substances that help control inflammation; its exact action in arthritis is not fully understood.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed. Swallow the gastro-resistant tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it. Take it regularly and do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness and skin rash may occur. Urine or skin may develop an orange-yellow discolouration.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergies to sulfonamides, salicylates or aspirin, and about liver or kidney problems, blood disorders, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Regular blood, liver and kidney tests may be needed. Seek urgent medical help for severe rash, fever, sore throat, unusual bruising or bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or breathing difficulty.
