What is it used for?
Teicoplanin is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including infections of the skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, lungs, blood, or heart valves. It is usually used in hospitals or under specialist supervision.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from multiplying.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, body weight, kidney function, and response to treatment. Do not self-administer or stop treatment early.

Common side effects
Injection-site pain or redness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, itching, and fever may occur. More serious reactions can include allergic reactions, kidney problems, hearing changes, or changes in blood-cell counts.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing problems, blood disorders, or any previous allergy to teicoplanin, vancomycin, or other medicines. Kidney function, blood counts, and sometimes hearing may need monitoring, especially during prolonged treatment or in people with kidney problems. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, blistering, or persistent severe diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if specifically advised by a doctor.
