What is it used for?
Teicoplanin is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including certain skin and soft-tissue, bone and joint, bloodstream, heart-valve and urinary infections. It may also be used for infections caused by bacteria such as MRSA when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making their protective cell wall, which kills or prevents the growth of the bacteria.

How to take/use it
Teicoplanin is given as an injection or infusion by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course and do not self-administer it.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, skin rash or itching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and fever may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to teicoplanin or similar antibiotics, kidney disease, hearing problems or blood disorders. Kidney function, blood counts and hearing may need monitoring during treatment, especially with prolonged use or high doses. Seek urgent medical attention for severe rash, breathing difficulty, severe diarrhoea, unusual bleeding or reduced urination. Tell the doctor if pregnant, breastfeeding or taking other medicines that may affect the kidneys or hearing.
