What is it used for?
Telmisartan 40 mg is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be prescribed to help reduce the risk of certain heart and blood vessel problems in some high-risk adults.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. This helps the blood vessels relax and lowers blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow it with water. It may be taken with or without food. Take it regularly and do not stop it without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, back pain, or low blood pressure may occur. Seek medical help for swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy; inform the doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs. Tell the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease, dehydration, or high potassium levels. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. The doctor should know about all medicines being used, especially lithium, diuretics, potassium-raising medicines, and regular painkillers such as ibuprofen. Blood pressure and kidney function may need monitoring.
