What is it used for?
Telmisartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be prescribed by a doctor to help reduce the risk of certain heart and blood-vessel problems in some high-risk adults.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels. This helps the blood vessels relax and lowers blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet with water; it can generally be taken with or without food. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, back pain and low blood pressure may occur. Seek medical advice if side effects are severe or persistent.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy, especially after the first three months, unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, dehydration, or narrowing of the kidney arteries. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. Other medicines, including lithium, certain painkillers and blood-pressure medicines, may interact with telmisartan. Rise slowly if dizziness occurs.
