What is it used for?
Telmisartan 40 mg is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be prescribed to help reduce the risk of certain heart and blood vessel problems in some high-risk adults.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. This helps relax the blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not stop treatment without medical advice, even if blood pressure improves.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, back pain, and low blood pressure may occur. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy, especially after the first 3 months; inform the doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, dehydration, or low blood pressure. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised by a doctor. Medical monitoring may be needed for blood pressure, kidney function, and potassium levels. Some medicines, including anti-inflammatory painkillers, may interact with telmisartan.
