What is it used for?
This medicine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), especially when one medicine alone does not control blood pressure adequately.

How does it work?
Telmisartan relaxes and widens blood vessels by blocking the action of a hormone that raises blood pressure. Chlorthalidone helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water, reducing the pressure within the blood vessels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. Take it at the same time each day, and do not stop it without medical advice. Regular blood pressure, kidney function and blood electrolyte checks may be needed.

Common side effects
Dizziness, light-headedness, headache, tiredness, increased urination, nausea and stomach upset may occur. Changes in potassium or other body salts can also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, dehydration, gout, diabetes or previous electrolyte problems. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. Contact a doctor if severe dizziness, fainting, muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat occurs. This medicine should not be used during pregnancy; seek medical advice promptly if pregnancy occurs. Inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, including painkillers such as ibuprofen or naproxen and lithium.
