What is it used for?
Terlipressin is used in hospitals to treat serious complications of advanced liver disease, especially hepatorenal syndrome, a condition in which kidney function worsens. It may also be used to help control bleeding from enlarged veins in the food pipe (oesophageal varices).

How does it work?
It acts like vasopressin and narrows certain blood vessels, especially those supplying the digestive organs. This can increase blood pressure and improve blood flow to the kidneys, while also helping reduce bleeding from varices.

How to take/use it

Common side effects
Abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, headache, pale skin, increased blood pressure, slow or irregular heartbeat, low sodium levels, and breathing difficulty due to fluid in the lungs may occur.

Tell the doctor about heart or blood-vessel disease, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, breathing problems, kidney problems, or pregnancy. Blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, fluid balance, and blood sodium levels may need monitoring.
