What is it used for?
Thyroxine is used as thyroid hormone replacement to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces the hormone that the thyroid gland does not produce in sufficient amounts.

How does it work?
It supplies synthetic thyroid hormone, helping restore normal thyroid hormone levels and support the body's metabolism and energy functions.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually on an empty stomach with water. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop or change the dose without medical advice. Keep calcium, iron, antacids and some other medicines separate from thyroxine as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Regular blood tests may be needed to adjust treatment.

Common side effects
Side effects are more likely if the dose is too high and may include palpitations, fast heartbeat, trembling, nervousness, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea and weight loss.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice for chest pain, severe or persistent palpitations, or marked shortness of breath. Do not use thyroxine for weight loss. Many medicines and supplements can affect its absorption, so provide a complete medicine list to the doctor or pharmacist.
