What is it used for?
Thyroxine sodium is used as thyroid hormone replacement to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It may also be prescribed to help prevent the thyroid from becoming underactive after certain thyroid treatments.

How does it work?
It supplies a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland. The body converts it into active thyroid hormone to help regulate metabolism and other body functions.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually consistently at the same time each day. It is commonly taken on an empty stomach with water, but follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist. Do not change the strength or stop treatment without medical advice. Calcium, iron and some antacids can reduce its absorption, so they may need to be taken separately.

Common side effects
Side effects are more likely if the dose is too high and may include palpitations, fast heartbeat, nervousness, tremors, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea and unexplained weight loss.

Precautions
Regular blood tests are needed to check thyroid hormone levels and adjust treatment. Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, adrenal problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice for chest pain, severe palpitations or breathlessness. Do not use thyroxine for weight loss. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines, especially calcium, iron, antacids and medicines affecting the heart or blood clotting.
