What is it used for?
Thyroxine 50 mcg is used as thyroid hormone replacement to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It may also be prescribed for other thyroid conditions under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It provides levothyroxine, a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4), helping restore normal thyroid hormone levels and body functions.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Swallow with water on an empty stomach, usually before breakfast, and take it consistently at the same time each day. Keep calcium, iron and antacid products at least 4 hours apart unless advised otherwise. Regular blood tests may be needed.

Common side effects
When the dose is too high, symptoms may include fast or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, tremors, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea and weight loss.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, adrenal problems or pregnancy. Seek medical advice for chest pain, severe or irregular heartbeat, marked shaking or breathlessness. Many medicines and supplements can affect absorption, so inform the doctor or pharmacist about all products being used.
