What is it used for?
Thyroxine sodium is used to replace the thyroid hormone that the body lacks, mainly to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It may also be prescribed after thyroid surgery or for certain thyroid conditions, as directed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It supplies a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. This helps restore normal body functions affected by low thyroid hormone levels.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily on an empty stomach, 30–60 minutes before breakfast. Take it at the same time each day with water. Keep calcium, iron, antacids and certain other medicines separate from it by the interval advised by the doctor or pharmacist. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
When the dose is correct, side effects are uncommon. A dose that is too high may cause palpitations, nervousness, tremors, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea or unexplained weight loss.

Precautions
Regular blood tests are needed to check thyroid hormone levels and adjust the dose. Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, pregnancy or plans to become pregnant. Inform the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements being used. Seek medical help for chest pain, severe or irregular heartbeat or severe breathlessness. This medicine should not be used for weight loss unless specifically prescribed.
