What is it used for?
Thyroxine sodium is used as thyroid hormone replacement to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It may also be used when the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone for other medical reasons.

How does it work?
It replaces the thyroxine hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland, helping restore normal body functions affected by low thyroid hormone levels.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day. It is usually taken on an empty stomach with water. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Calcium, iron, antacids and some other medicines may reduce its absorption, so ask a doctor or pharmacist about suitable separation.

Common side effects
Side effects are more likely if the dose is too high and may include fast or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, tremor, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea and weight loss.

Precautions
Regular blood tests are needed to check thyroid hormone levels and adjust the dose. Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy, adrenal problems or any other medicines being taken. Seek medical help for chest pain, severe palpitations or shortness of breath.
