What is it used for?
Ticagrelor is used with prescribed treatment to reduce the risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome, such as a heart attack or unstable angina. It may also help prevent clots in a coronary stent.

How does it work?
It prevents blood platelets from sticking together and forming harmful clots by blocking the P2Y12 platelet receptor.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same times each day, with or without food. Do not stop taking it without medical advice, as this may increase the risk of a heart attack or blood clot. Tell the doctor before surgery or dental procedures that it is being taken.

Common side effects
Bleeding, easy bruising, nosebleeds, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, nausea and diarrhoea.

Precautions
Seek urgent medical help for severe or uncontrolled bleeding, blood in the urine or stools, vomiting blood, or sudden severe headache or weakness. Inform the doctor about a history of bleeding, stomach ulcers, stroke or brain bleeding, liver disease, or breathing problems. Tell the doctor about all other medicines, especially blood thinners and medicines that may increase bleeding risk. Avoid stopping treatment or taking painkillers such as ibuprofen without medical advice.
