What is it used for?
Ticagrelor is used with prescribed treatment, usually including aspirin, to reduce the risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke in people with certain heart conditions such as a recent heart attack or acute coronary syndrome (unstable heart-related chest pain).

How does it work?
It is an antiplatelet medicine that stops blood cells called platelets from sticking together and forming harmful clots.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and at the same times each day. Swallow the tablet with water; it may usually be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking it without medical advice, as this may increase the risk of a heart attack or clot. If a dose is missed, follow the prescriber's instructions rather than taking extra medicine.

Common side effects
Bleeding or bruising more easily, nosebleeds, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, nausea and diarrhoea.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any active bleeding, previous bleeding in the brain, liver disease, planned surgery or dental treatment. Seek urgent medical help for heavy or uncontrolled bleeding, black stools, vomiting blood, sudden severe headache or breathing difficulty. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines, especially anticoagulants, other antiplatelet medicines, NSAID painkillers and medicines that affect ticagrelor levels. Do not change any prescribed aspirin dose without medical advice.
