What is it used for?
Tigecycline is an injectable antibiotic used to treat certain serious bacterial infections, including complicated skin and soft-tissue infections, complicated infections inside the abdomen, and some community-acquired bacterial pneumonias. It is used only when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Tigecycline is given as an intravenous infusion by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection and individual health factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, and changes in liver enzyme levels.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to tigecycline or other tetracycline antibiotics, liver disease, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. It is generally avoided in children under 8 years unless specifically advised by a specialist because it may affect teeth and bone development. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty.
