What is it used for?
Tofacitinib is used to treat autoimmune inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ulcerative colitis, usually when other treatments have not worked well or are not suitable.

How does it work?
It blocks Janus kinase (JAK) enzymes involved in immune-system signalling. This helps reduce the inflammation and abnormal immune activity causing symptoms.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor, with or without food. Swallow the tablet as directed and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular blood tests and medical check-ups may be needed.

Common side effects
Upper respiratory infections, headache, diarrhoea, nausea, acne and increased cholesterol levels may occur.

Precautions
Tofacitinib can increase the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis, shingles and other infections. Inform the doctor about any infection, tuberculosis or hepatitis history, cancer, heart disease or blood clots. Seek medical help for fever, persistent cough, painful skin rash, chest pain or sudden breathing difficulty. Avoid live vaccines and tell the doctor about all medicines being taken. Blood counts, liver function and cholesterol may need monitoring.
