What is it used for?
Torsemide is used to reduce excess fluid retention (oedema), which may occur with heart, kidney or liver problems. It may also be prescribed to help control high blood pressure.

How does it work?
It is a diuretic, or “water tablet.” It helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water from the body through urine, reducing swelling and sometimes lowering blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. It is usually taken earlier in the day because it increases urination. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach upset, weakness, dehydration and changes in body salts such as low potassium.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is kidney or liver disease, low blood pressure, dehydration, diabetes or gout. Rise slowly if dizziness occurs, and follow advice about fluid and salt intake. Seek medical help for severe weakness, fainting, confusion, irregular heartbeat, very little urine or signs of severe dehydration. Tell the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially lithium or other medicines that lower blood pressure or affect body salts.
