What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat and airways, ears, urinary tract and other susceptible areas. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by the doctor. It may be taken with or without food. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, and do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting may occur. Headache or rash can also occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
