What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, airways and urinary tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It belongs to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics. It kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share it with others or take extra doses to make up for a missed dose.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting. Skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics without medical advice. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea or allergies. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Use only when prescribed for a bacterial infection.
