What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, throat, airways, urinary tract and other areas. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and duration, and complete the course even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics with others.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting. Skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefixime, cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics, and about kidney problems. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment. Use only for a confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infection and only under medical advice.
